Rules and policies

Rules and policies are in place to make sure your child remains safe and well at school.

Visit the NSW Department of Education’s policy library for all current operational policies.

Our school uses the department's School Community Charter to ensure all of our communication is collaborative and respectful.

Attendance and absences

Students must attend school regularly so they can achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options.

In NSW, all children from the age of 6 are legally required to attend school or be registered for home schooling through the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). All students must complete Year 10, or its equivalent and remain in school, employment or training until they turn 17.

For more information about compulsory school attendance, visit:

School frameworks (school rules)

As well as following the department’s operational policies, we have developed frameworks for our students in line with our school’s values and commitments.

Assessment and Reporting

At Berowra Public School assessment is seen as the process of identifying, gathering, analysing and interpreting information in order to make judgements about students' learning and achievements in relation to syllabus outcomes.

The central purpose of assessment is to provide information on student achievement and progress and set the direction for ongoing teaching and learning. To read further about assessment and reporting at Berowra Public School, download the policy from the link below.

Presentation Day Awards

Students at Berowra Public School are recognised for individual achievement of very high standards in academic work. This recognition takes place both within the context of the classroom as well as through academic achievement of the students in the wider school community.

Anti-Bullying Plan

The NSW Department of Education rejects all forms of bullying.  No student, employee, parent, caregiver or community member should experience bullying within the learning or working environments of the Department.

Emergency Management Plan

What Schools In Areas with Catastrophic Fire Danger Ratings Should Do

In general, schools will not be directed to temporarily close when there is a catastrophic fire danger rating unless there are specific risks which warrant such a closure e.g. there are local fires already burning in the area, the school has limited road access in and out of the area or is surrounded by bushland, or advice has been received from the local Rural Fire Service that the school should not operate due to the conditions.

The State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) notifies the Department at approximately 4:30 pm each day when there are Catastrophic fire danger ratings predicted for the following day. Departmental officers then advise and consult with regional directors and school education directors in affected areas.

If there is an imminent risk to schools, the State Emergency Operations Controller (SEOCON)ullying Website may issue a written direction under Section 61 of the State Emergency and Rescue Management Act 1989 to temporarily close an education facility.

Additionally, the regional director or school education director may decide in the absence of a written direction that due to local conditions, a school should temporarily cease operations. Where a decision is made that a school should temporarily cease operations, the school education director will contact the principal as soon as possible. Liaison will occur with transport providers and local media outlets in order to get the message to students and their families the night before or early in the morning.
